Mentha Arvensis Extract Description

_Mentha arvensis_ (AKA corn mint) extract comes from a plant species that produces extracts and oils primarily used in skin care for perfuming purposes. Its stem, leaf and flowers are all used to create cosmetic ingredients. This species is a part of the mint family, which also includes _Mentha spicata_ (spearmint) and _Mentha x piperita_ (peppermint).

_Mentha arvensis_ essential oils contain menthol, a skin-sensitizing monoterpene that produces a cooling sensation when applied to skin. Although this cooling sensation is often thought of as soothing, it’s a sign that your skin is being sensitized.

Various extracts and oils derived from the stems, flowers and leaves of this plant also often contain menthone (fragrant compound), isomenthol (fragrant compound), pulegone (fragrant compound) and phenols (antioxidant compounds). The volatile, aromatic compounds present in _Mentha arvensis_ can further cause skin sensitization, both short- and long-term.

Beyond skin sensitization, including redness, itchiness, tightness and dryness, some studies show that _Mentha arvensis_ oils can help curb the growth of unwanted organisms and can provide antioxidant benefits.

Whether listed as an extract or oil, Mentha arvensis-derived materials have many applications outside of the cosmetic industry, including in the food and home industries. Their appearance and concentration levels vary based on the form of _Mentha arvensis_ used in a formulation.
